Joseph was born 1858 in Rectory Lane, Farnham, Essex to John and Martha Livings. His father was an agricultural labourer.
Joseph became a saddler and by 1891 had moved to Berkhamsted where he lodged in Cross Oak Road with an agricultural labourer and his family.
Joseph married widow Anne Emma Woollett (née Hill) in 1899 in the district of St George’s Hanover Square, London. Anne had three children by her late husband, an inn keeper in Kent.
In 1901 they lived at 22, Gossoms End and in 1911 at 26, Cross Oak Road.
Joseph died 3 February 1931 61, Cross Oak Road aged 72. Annie survived him until 1948.
