Joseph was born in 1852 to William and Emma London. His father was an agricultural labourer and the family lived in High Street, Northchurch.

In 1871 Joseph was a ploughman at Marlin Farm, Northchurch.

He married Martha Gudgin in 1880 in Berkhamsted. (She was the daughter of Robert Gudgin who is buried in this cemetery along with several other of her relatives.)

Mary was born in 1881 by which time Joseph was employed as a groom and the family lived in Castle Street.

Percy was born in 1884 and Arthur in 1892.

By 1901 Joseph was working as a domestic gardener

He died at 5, George Street, Northchurch in May 1903 aged 51.
