Joseph was born in 1874 in Berkhamsted, the son of George and Kezia Rowe.
In 1891 he was living with his parents and three younger siblings in Mill Street. His father was a mill labourer and Joseph an agricultural labourer.
In 1899 he married Elvina Mary Ann Hicks at St Saviour, Southwark.
Elvina Beatrice was born in 1900 in Croydon, but by 1901 the family was at 3, Bridge Street, Berkhamsted. Joseph was employed as a brewery labourer. Also living with them was his widowed mother and his unmarried sister Beatrice.
Joseph William was born in 1902 followed by Horace Ernest (1904), Alfred Frederick (1906), Violet May (1906) and Frank Frederick (1910).
By 1911 the family were living at 17, Highfield Road and Joseph was still a brewer’s labourer.
Ethel Louisa was born in 1913, then Doris (1916), James Walter (1918) and Charles David (1920). By the time Bertha P was born in 1922 they were living at 2, Ravens Lane and Joseph was a labourer employed by Lockhart’s coal merchants.
Joseph died 4 June 1935 at 18, Curtis Way, Berkhamsted, aged 61. Elvina survived him until 1965 and is buried here with him.
His father George is also buried in this cemetery.
