Julia Ludlow

Unmarked grave Julia Maria Ludlow (née Bishop) (i858-1922)
Julia was born in 1858 in Finchingfield, Essex to George and Mary Bishop. Her father was a gardener, later a groom and, by 1861, a coachman employed by the occupant of The Lodge, Black Notely, Essex, a hamlet just south of Braintree.
Between at least 1881 and 1891, Julia was a domestic servant in Brixton, employed by the Durrell family, headed by Mr Durrell, a gentleman “living on his own means”.
In 1893 she gave birth to Jessie Bishop in Black Notely and then in 1896 to Sidney Leonard. Their father or fathers are unknown.
Julia remained in Black Notely with the children and in the 1891 census, aged 42, she was working as a needlewoman making shirts.
Julia married widower Thomas Ludlow, a wheelwright born in Aylesbury, in Berkhamsted in 1901. How they came to meet is a mystery, although Thomas’s first wife, Elizabeth was also from Essex.
In 1911 Julia, Thomas and Sidney, who was employed as a grocer’s errand boy, were living at 5, Cross Oak Road. Jessie was a domestic servant locally and later married in the town. In 1912 she had a son, Harold, out of wedlock
Thomas and Julia later moved to 9, Cross Oak Road.
1918 was a tragic year for Julia. Thomas died 26 March and then Sidney was killed in action in France in August 1918. He was serving as a private in the Hertfordshire Regiment and is buried at Bagneux British Cemetery, Gezaincourt.
The 1921 census shows Julia living at 9, Cross Oak Road with her grandson Harold.
She died May 1922 at 9, Cross Oak Road aged 62.
Thomas is also buried in this cemetery, as is his son Frederick George by his first wife.
