LAURA SOPHIA ADAMS (NEE THOMAS) Laura Sophia Thomas was born in 1876, in Hatfield, Herts, to James Dunton Thomas and Eliza (nee Austin). James was from Enfield, the son of a master wheelwright,  and Eliza from Tottenham. They married in Islington on the 31st of January 1867. They settled in Park Street, Hatfield, where James worked as a baker. Laura was the fourth of five children. Laura lived in Hatfield with her parents, and then her brother, after her parents died. She worked for a time as a dressmaker, and in 1896 had an illegitimate daughter, Agnes, in 1896. In the 1911 census, aged 15, Agnes is described as “from an earlier marriage”. Laura married Francis Nathaniel Adams (see separate entry for more detail) on the 25th of March 1903, at St Mary’s, Hertingfordbury. They had two children together. Frank was a police officer, and the family moved several times, from Hertford, to Wheathampstead, to Hemel Hempstead (where they lived in the Police Station), and eventually, in retirement, to Berkhamsted, where they lived at 53 High Street. Laura died on the 2nd of September 1944, and is buried in Plot 1148. Frank survived her by 5 years, and is buried with her.
