Leonard Godfrey Copeland

Unmarked grave Leonard Godfrey Copeland (1897-1940)
Leonard was born in 1897 in Peckham, the son of Edward Augustus and Frances Elizabeth (née King) Copeland. His father was a painter and decorator.
Leonard found himself employment as a gas works maintenance attendant with the South metropolitan Gas Co. in the Old Kent Road.
He enlisted in the Army almost immediately war was declared, signing on 10th August 1914, aged 18. His record shows that he was 5 foot 4 ½ inches tall with good vision and good physical development. He joined the City of London Corps, but was discharged after 53 days. His record shows “unlikely to become an efficient soldier.” No other reason is given; certainly there is no suggestion that his conduct or mental capacity were in doubt, so presumably he was simply not robust enough.
In 1921 Leonard was living at home at 131, Brayard’s Road, Peckham, with his parents and three of his sisters.
In late 1932 he married Kathleen Rose Ellen Pennick in Camberwell and in 1939 they were living at 10, Venner Road, Lewisham. Leonard was employed as a mail porter.
In 1940 the Copelands were living at 106, Gossoms End, but it is not known what brought the couple to Berkhamsted. Leonard died in West Herts Hospital in December 1940 aged 43.
Kathleen moved to Colchester where she married Arthur J Short in 1947.
