Lilian (registered as Lily) was born 20th December 1878 at Portsea, Hants. Her parents were Obadiah Higby (born in Tring) and Sarah Jane (née Lovett) from London. They had married in 1871 in Berkhamsted, the same year that Obadiah was serving as a gunner on the ironclad battleship HNS Resistance.
By 1891 she was living with her parents in Southampton where Obadiah was a labourer in the shipyard. She was the oldest of four children, with sister Sarah and brothers John and Robert.
Lilian married William Joseph Bates on the 13th October 1900 at Berkhamsted.
In March the next year they were living with her husband’s brother-in-law William Duncombe and his wife Eliza at 20, Ravens Lane. William was employed as a chemical works labourer. Also living with them was her twelve year old brother Robert.
In 1906 their only child, Hilda Louisa Nellie, was born and by 1911 they were living at 30, Ellesmere Road. By 1929 they had moved to 7, Highfield Road and it was here that William died in 1931.
Lilian and Hilda had moved to Hemel Hempstead by 1939, living at 32, Stratford Way, Hemel Hempstead.
Lilian died on the 7th September 1956 at 32, Stratford Way, Hemel Hempstead aged seventy eight and was laid to rest here with William.
