Lizzie Geary
Plot 473 Lizzie (Elizabeth) Geary (née Duncombe) (1878-1963)
Lizzie was born c.1878/9 in Berkhamsted, the youngest of the five children of unmarried mother Emma Duncombe who lived at Canal Side.
In 1891 she was living at The Stag in Gossoms End and working as a domestic servant.
Lizzie married Alfred Geary, a sawyer, on 27th December 1897 at St Peter’s Church, Berkhamsted.
Their first son Alfred Ernest James Geary was born 22nd September 1898 in the registration district of St Saviour Southwark in London. Why they were in London is not known but by 1901 the couple were living at 15, Holliday Street, next door to Alfred’s parents. Their second son, Cyril, was born on 27th May 1903 in Holliday Street.
In 1911 Alfred and Lizzie were living at 1, Provident Place with Alfred junior and Cyril.
The family moved to Watford for a time and the admissions register for the National School in Watford records Cyril Geary admitted on 18th November 1912, having previously attended Victoria School in Berkhamsted. The family were living at 34, Diamond Road Watford. Just 11 days later the admission register states that Cyril’s last day at the Watford school was on 29th November 1912.
They moved to Leighton Buzzard where Cyril attended the British School from 20th January 1913. The family were living at the Kings Arms, North Street, but the stay in Leighton Buzzard was short and the school register tells us that on 1st August 1913 Cyril had “Gone to Berkhamsted”.
On 16th August 1914 Alfred junior joined the Hertfordshire Regiment and went to fight, just months into the First World War. No doubt to his parents’ great relief he was discharged on 29th September 1916 due to sickness and was able to return home, safe, if not well.
In 1920 Alfred, Lizzie and Alfred jnr. were living at 64, George Street where they remained until 1930. In 1925 Cyril had moved back home, shortly before marrying Elizabeth Duncombe. In 1928 Alfred junior married Hilda Dorothy Preston.
In 1930 Alfred and Lizzie moved for the last time to 13 Chapel Street.
Alfred died at 13 Chapel Street on 24th November 1941 and was buried here. Lizzie survived him until 1963 and was laid to rest with him.
