Plot 960 Louisa Philbey (née Pooley)

Louisa was born in 1860 in Norris’s Row, Northchurch, the first child of William Pooley, a labourer and gardener, and his wife Emma (née George), a straw plaiter.

Two brothers were born but then her mother died in 1871 when Louisa was eleven. Probably a great deal of the domestic work fell on her young shoulders.

The 1881 census shows that William had moved his family to George Street and his unmarried niece Sarah George, aged 39, was their housekeeper. Louisa was working as a needlewoman, her seventeen year old brother Fred was a printer and fourteen year old William was still at school. Also with them were her paternal grandmother and her uncle, who was a labourer.

Louisa married Jesse Philbey, a saw sharpener, in late 1885 and Alfred W was born in 1887.

The 1891 census records the family at 3, Cross Oak Road. Arthur Ernest had just been born but apparently not yet named – he appears on the census return as “Infant”, aged one month. Louisa’s widowed father was living with them and would stay until at least 1901.

By 1911 they had moved to Whelply Hill near Bovingdon.

Arthur died 5 March 1915 Whelply Hill aged just twenty. It was to be a sad year for the family as Sylvia Louisa Mary, the first child of son Alfred and his wife Ellen, died in late August, aged just two years. She is recorded in the burials register and is likely to be the burial in this cemetery, recorded only as “Philbey” in the burials record.

At the time of the 1921 census Louisa and Jesse were visiting their son Alfred, a chauffeur-gardener, his wife and family in Chalfont St Giles.

When the 1939 Register was compiled Jesse and Louisa had moved back to Berkhamsted and were living at 13, Park Street. Jesse had retired.

Louisa died 15 August 1949. Jesse survived her until 1968 and is buried here with her and Arthur.
