Mabel Grace Neale
1879 –1939

Unmarked grave Mabel Grace Neale (née Fuller) (1879-1939)

Mabel was born in 1879 in Dorking to John and Mary (née Inwood) Fuller.

The 1881 census records the family at Prospect Lodge, Polesden Lacey, Great Bookham, Surrey. Her father was an estate carpenter and Mabel had five older brothers and four older and one younger sister. Polesden Lacey house (now National Trust) is an imposing mansion with extensive grounds. They were still at the lodge ten years later.

Mabel married Walter Neal, a farmer/grazier, in Great Bookham on 17 April 1900 and they were to have 12 children.

William John (1901), Katherine Grace (1902), Harry Walter (1904), Albert Edward (1905), Gwendolyn Victoria (1907), Raymond Thomas (1908), Ronald Augustus (1909) and Harold Edwin (1910) were all born at Great Bookham.

By 1911 they had moved to Effingham Hill, Dorking.

Mabel Winifred  was born in 1912, Leslie C (1914), Ormonde S in 1915 in Shenfield, Surrey and Stanley Oswald (1919) and Basil G (1921) in Chitterne, Wiltshire where Walter was employed by a Mr Collins as bailiff at Manor Farm.

They moved to 284A, High Street, Berkhamsted where Mabel died in February 1939 aged 60.

In the 1939 Register Walter is still at that address (occupation unemployed farm manager) with Harold (a blacksmith’s striker) and Stanley (a painter).
