Plot 532 Margaret Howliston (1840-1907)

Much of Margaret’s life has proved difficult to trace, probably because of mis-transcriptions of her surname.

She was born in 1839 in Thames Ditton, Surrey the youngest child of John Howliston, born in Berwickshire, Scotland, and Sarah (née Tongue) born in Thames Ditton. Her father was a compositor (setter of type for printing) and she had five older brothers and an older sister.

In 1851, aged just twelve, Margaret was living with her family but as employed as a domestic servant – probably as a scullery maid.

Her mother died when Margaret was nineteen, but after that little is known other than that she never married and became an accoucheur (a midwife).

In 1901 she was retired and living alone in Streatham and in 1907, when she died, her address was 18, Cavendish Road, Balham.

She died 30 May 1907 aged 67 at Fairholme, Cross Oak Road and left the equivalent of just over £34,000 in today’s money to Mrs Julia Kate Lamb, at whose home she had passed away.
