Maria was born in 1803 in Northchurch to Thomas and Mary Green and married William Winter, a gardener, in Berkhamsted in 1821.
Sarah was born in 1824, followed by Mary Ann (1826), Maria jnr (1829), Joseph (1830), George (1834), Isabella (1835), Harriet (1836-8) and James (1839).
In 1841 the family was living in the High Street, Berkhamsted.
Harriet arrived in 1842, then Elizabeth (1845), Edwin (1848) and Alfred (1849).
In 1851 they were in the High Street. Maria, Sarah, Mary Ann, Isabella and Harriet were straw plaiters. Joseph was an ostler and James, Elizabeth and Edwin were at school. Mary Ann married that year.
In 1861 the family was still in the High Street. William was a gardener. Maria, Harriet and Elizabeth were straw plaiters, Joseph and George were grooms, James was a bootmaker and Edwin and Alfred were at school.
In 1866 Harriet gave birth to Kate whose father is unknown.
William died in May 1869 aged 73. He is buried in this cemetery as are their daughter Harriet (1836-38), their son Joseph (1829-1901), their granddaughter Kate (1866-1910).
Maria died in April 1871 aged 67, shortly after the census was taken.
