Unmarked grave Marie Antoinette Maulkin (1882-1900)

Marie was born in 1882 in Orsett, Essex, to unmarried mother Emma Maulkin. Emma had been born in 1850 in Aldgate in London and was the daughter of a butcher. Marie’s father is not known, although her mother Emma did marry a groom, Josiah Bates, in 1893. It has not been possible to trace Marie’s whereabouts between her birth in 1882 and her death at the age of 18 in Berkhamsted but her mother and husband Josiah had moved to Berkhamsted by the time the 1901 census was taken and were living in Cross Oak Road. It was at Cross Oak Road that Marie died, aged 18, on 9 October 1900.

On her death Marie left the sum of £123 2s 9d, which, according to the Probate record was administered by the “solicitor of H,M. Treasury.”

Both Emma’s mother and her aunt Mary Ann are buried in the cemetery
