Plot 238 Mary Ann Reading Gravestock (née Wheeler) (1856-1933)

Mary Ann was born in Aylesbury in 1856 to James and Mary Wheeler.

Her father was a cooper and in 1861 the family was living in the High Street, Berkhamsted.

The 1871 census recorded Mary Ann with her family in Eddy Street, Northchurch and attending school.

Mary Ann married George Gravestock, a brewer’s labourer, in Northchurch, 3 October 1875.

Edith was born in 1876 followed by Ellen E (1878) and Florence J (1880). In 1881 the family were living at Holliday Street.

Lily Marion (1885), Lydia (1887), Emma (1889) and Stanley (1891) completed their family. In the 1891 census Mary Ann’s widowed mother staying with them, perhaps to help with the new baby.

George died 3 March 1896 Kittsbury Road aged only 41 and is buried here. Mary Ann can hardly have recovered from that when Lily died in November 1901, aged 17. She is buried in this cemetery.

In 1911 Mary Ann was living with her sister Ellen Elizabeth and her son-in-law John Jennings, a pharmacist, in 35, Streatham Place, Brixton. Mary Ann was running a drapery business from the house.

She died 27 November 1933 at 162, Sussex Road Pinner, aged 77.
