Plot 1154 Mary Elizabeth Reading (1869-1950)

Mary was born in 1869 in Chesham, the oldest daughter and the fourth child of Charles and Sarah Reading’s five offspring. In the 1871 Charles was described as “farmer’s son” and the family lived at Broadway, Chesham.

Her father took over Marlin Farm in Northchurch and the 1881 census records him as the farmer of 125 acres, employing three labourers and a boy. Eight children were still at home and Mary was a “scholar”.

Mary never married. In 1901 she was a dressmaker and a boarder at 51, Charles Street, the home of Miss Mary Andrews but by 1911 she was living with her parents at 4, Shrublands Avenue and was a self-employed dressmaker.

In 1921, aged 52, she was occupied with “home duties”, presumably caring for her parents.

The 1939 Register records her at 4, Shrublands Avenue with Rosa Parsley and Sarah Cannon. It seems likely that she was their landlady. However, the fact that she and Rosa are buried here together suggests a relationship of friends.

Mary died in September 1950 aged 81.
