Mary was the first child of eleven born to Frederick Hale and his second wife Mary (née Hammond). Frederick was a draper who was born in Holborn, London but who had moved to Berkhamsted by 1851.

Mary (her second name was her paternal grandmother’s maiden name) was born 3 June 1865 but tragically died aged two on 6 July1867. Her younger sister Portia was to die only eight days later. Her parents lost their first four children, all daughters, under the age of three.

Happily four sons and three daughters survived infancy, although one child, Lucy Rosa, died aged nine.

Her father and his first wife Eliza lie in plot 116.
