Mary Winfield was born on 6 April 1875, in Ley Hill, to William and Hannah Noah.
The family moved to Berkhamsted when Mary was a small child, as in 1881 they were living in ‘Canal Side’ (near Mill Street). William was working as a labourer.
In 1891 Mary was working as a general servant for a jeweller’s family in Barnes. She returned to Berkhamsted by 1895 to marry Arthur WinfieldIn 1901 they were living in Highfield Road, with their two young children, and Arthur was working as a coal porter.
In 1911 they were in 3 Back Lane, a four roomed house, with their son Frederick, daughter Elsie and a male lodger,
In 1921 Arthur had moved jobs again, now ‘housekeeper’ at the Co-op store in Cowper Road. Frederick and Elsie, in their twenties, were still living at home, and both working in the mantle factory.
On the 1939 Register Arthur and Mary were still living in Back Lane, at no 5. Arthur was doing ‘light work at Co-op store’. Arthur
Despite being in low paid work throughout his life, Arthur left £490 18s 6d when he died.in 1947. Mary survived him by ten years dying in 1957
