Mathew Bishop (864)

Plot 864: Mathew Bishop
Mathew was born in 1848 at the Boot public house (now a private home), Buckland Common, Bucks. His father William, a local man, was the publican and his mother, Sarah (née Wright), came from Cholsbury, Bucks.
By the time of the 1871 census Mathew was twenty two and working as a wheelwright, lodging with the family of James Crawley, also a wheelwright, in Tring. Probably Mathew was James’s employee.
Mathew married Annie Langham in St Stephen’s, Islington, 21st April 1877. They were to have five daughters and four sons, one of whom died in infancy.
In 1881 they were living at Regent Park Terrace in Finchley and Mathew was following his trade as a wheelwright. The next year they suffered the loss of little William who was just one year old.
By the time of the 1901 census they had moved to 59, Osborn Road, Acton and Mathew was described as a coach builder and they had a lodger who was a coach painter, doubtless working alongside Mathew.
In 1911 they were at 164, Bollo Bridge Road, Action. Mathew was a self-employed wheelwright and their son Herbert George was assisting him in the business. Daughter Annie Ida was also at home and the substantial house contained seven rooms.
At some point before 1919 Mathew and Annie moved to Berkhamsted and are recorded in the electoral registers for that year at 32 Highfield Road. They were still there in 1921 when Mathew was employed by Mr Holliday, wheelwright.
Mathew passed away in 1923 aged seventy four. Annie remained in the same house until her death 21st February 1951, aged ninety seven and was laid to rest with him here.
Mathew’s cousin Frederick, a butcher, and his wife Elizabeth, lie in plot x210. Frederick was the son of Mathew’s brother Joseph.
