Biography:
Matthew Brackley
1775 –18/08/1845

Plot 194 Matthew Brackley (1775-1845)

Matthew was born in 1775, probably in Buckinghamshire.

On 7 November 1796 he married Phillis Brandom at St Mary’s, Northchurch.

Their sons were baptised in St Peter’s: Moses (23 September 1804) and Aaron (31 May 1807).

Phillis died in 1812 and was buried at St Peter’s, 2 April.

In the 1841 census Matthew is recorded as being an agricultural labourer and living at “King’s Mill” which appears to have been somewhere between the Haresfoot estate and the present site of the Girl’s School. It was noted that he was not born in Hertfordshire. Living with him was Maria Redding, a “female servant” aged about fifty five.

Matthew was buried 21 August 1845 “by Coroner’s warrant.” (Parish register)

It may not be a coincidence that the son of James Brackley, also buried in this plot, was called Moses. Possibly James and Matthew were brothers.

Bertie Brackley (1884-1912) buried in this cemetery is likely to have been a relative.
