Unmarked grave Maud Martha Howard (née Elliot) (1880-1937)

Maud was born in 1880 in St Neots, Huntingdon, the first child of Thomas Watkins Elliot, a stationary engine driver born in Bedfordshire, and Hannah (née Wootton). In 1881 she and her parents were living in St Neots in the home of her maternal grandparents.

Ten years later the family had their own home in St Neots. Thomas was an agricultural labourer and Maud now had three sisters and two brothers.

It is likely that she moved to Berkhamsted to take up a position as a domestic servant. In 1900 she married George Noah, a general labourer from Berkhamsted. Their daughter Siberetta was born that year.

In 1901 they were living at 15, Red Lion Yard, a crowded and very poor part of town. George died later that year and Ellen Elizabeth Noah was born posthumously in 1902. Maud must have been in a very difficult situation with two small children and no breadwinner and it is not surprising that on 27 July 1902 she married Henry Howard, a farm labourer from Kent.

Their first child, Joseph, was born in 1904, followed by Henry William (1908), Rose Hannah (1909) and Kate 1911.

In 1911 they were living at Lower Lodge, Bourne End where Ernest was born the next year.

Henry enlisted in the Army in November 1915, the year Maud Martha jnr. was born. He appears to have served in the UK until November 1917 when he was shipped to Alexandria where he served in Egypt until he left Port Said in February 1919. He was demobbed in March on his return to the UK.

Charles was born in 1920 and in 1921 they were still at Lower Lodge.

Maud died in June 1937 at Hempstead House hospital in Hemel Hempstead. She was 57.
