Michael was born in 1860 in Berkhamsted, the youngest child of Jesse and Elizabeth (née Cheney). His father was a gardener and in 1816 the family were living in New Road, Northchurch. Michael had five older brothers and a sister.
By the time of the 1871 census things had become hard for the family who were living at Canal Side. Jesse had died, two of Michael’s brothers were out of work, although another was employed. His mother and sisters were straw plaiters and the three youngest boys, including Michael, were at plait school.
By 1881 Michael was living with his sister Zilphah and her husband Edward Osborne, a bricklayer’s labourer in Red Lion Yard. He was employed as a gardener’s labourer.
Michael married Sarah Noah in Berkhamsted in 1882 and in 1891 they were living in Red Lion Yard with their children Daisy (1882), Arthur (1884), Lizzie (1887) and Alice (1890).
The family grew with Albert (1892), Sarah Ann (1894), Rose Edith (1896) and George William (1898). At least with four Dealey, or related, families also living in Red Lion Yard baby-sitting was not likely to be a problem!
In 1901 they were living at 19, Red Lion Yard and Michael was a general labourer, as was son Arthur.
Maud was born in 1905 and finally Esther in 1909.
By the time of the 191l census Michael and Sarah were living with seven of their children in the household of their daughter Daisy who had married farm labourer Alfred Final and had four children of her own. In total fifteen people were living in six rooms at 4, Water Lane.
From 1919 Michael is on the electoral register as the sole voter at 2, Water Lane and in 1922 he was the sole voter for 4, Water Lane.
Michael died December 1923 aged 63 and was buried 5 December.
His brothers Joseph and Charles are buried in this cemetery in unmarked graves.
