Minnie Frances was born in 1886 in Fulham, London, the fourth of the five children of . Frank Edward Thorn and Annie Harriet (née Weight). The family lived in a mews near Earl’s Court and her father owned at least one hackney cab, as he was described in the 1901 census as a “cab proprietor”, and her older brother worked as a cab driver. At the time of that census Minnie was working as a dressmaker.
In 1906 she married William Henry Bates in Fulham. William was a high-tension cable joiner’s mate working on the underground railway, a highly-skilled and unusual job at the time.
In the 1911 census they are recorded as living at 23, Tasso Road, Fulham with their sons
William Frederick (born 1908), Sidney Albert (1910) and Frederick Arthur (1911). Daughter Ella was born in 1914. By 1921 the family had moved to 12, Humboldt Road, Fulham.
The 1924 Fulham electoral register lists Minnie and William Henry at 22, Lintaine Grove but, by the time of the 1936 and 1937 electoral registers, Minnie Frances and her son Sidney Albert Bates are at 6, Avondale Avenue, Neasden.
The 1939 Register lists Minnie, her unmarried son Frederick, her married daughter Ella and her widowed mother living together at 9, Foundling Hospital Close, Berkhamsted. This road no longer exists, but may have been renamed Coram Close, close to Ashlyn’s School, which would fit with the enumerator’s route.
William Henry, however, was recorded at the same time still at Lintaine Grove, Fulham with his elderly father.
Whatever the reason for this separation Minnie remained in Berkhamsted. Her son Frederick Arthur, an artist, died here in October 1943 at the age of thirty two. When Minnie died on the 3rd September 1951 she was laid to rest here with him.
