Biography:
Percy Mee
04/09/1861 –1939

Unmarked grave Percy Mee (1861-1939)

Percy was born 4 September 1861 and Baptised 20 October 1861 in Chesterfield, Derbyshire. His father was Henry Mee, a jeweller and watchmaker, his mother, Mary Ann. He was their third son and seventh child.

In 1863 his father became bankrupt and his mother died in 1864. In 1871 Percy and his siblings were living with their father in what must have been a very sad household.

In 1881, aged 19, he was living with his unmarried sister Mary, a dressmaker, brother Harry, a solicitor’s clerk and their sister Hester at 57, St Helens Street, Chesterfield. Percy was also a solicitor’s clerk. Ten years later they were all at 34, St Helens Street and Percy was an accountant.

He married Ann Eliza Bennett who had been born in Yorkshire in 1894 in the Annunciation Roman Catholic Chapel in Chesterfield and they moved to Sheffield where Percy took employment as an agent with an industrial insurance firm.

They do not appear to have had any children.

In 1911 they were living at 5, Shooters Grove, Wood Lane, Sheffield. He was an insurance agent for the Royal London insurance company.

In June 1921, still at 5, Shooters Grove, Percy was a “Collector, salesman for Singer Sewing Machines” and Ann was a “collector saleswoman”.

The couple moved to Berkhamsted and were recorded in the 1929 and 1930 electoral rolls  living at Elmcroft, Elm Grove, apparently in the household of Eleanor and Gilbert Hudson.

By the time the 1939 Register was taken both Percy and Ann Eliza were inmates of Hempstead House in Hemel Hempstead where Percy died November 1939 aged 78.
