PETER WILLIAM BETTS: 1879 - 1943
Peter William Betts was born in Fenny Stratford on 18th October 1879 to James and Emma Betts, née Scrivener. James was a labourer and in 1881 they were living in Rickmansworth where Peter was christened on 13th January 1884. Peter had seven siblings, Mary Ann, born in 1867; Esther,1869; Maria,1871; Reuben,1873-1884; Ruth, 1876; Alice, 1878 and David, 1883 - 1946.
In 1891 Peter’s parents appear to be living in different places. His father James, was living in the Railway Inn, Elstree, and his mother, described as head of the family, was living in the Lock House in Rickmansworth. Her daughters Maria and Ruth were mill hands whilst Peter and his brother David were scholars.
By 1901 James (father) was back with the family and they were living in Tring. Their daughters had left and Peter and David were still at home. David was a carpenter’s apprentice and Peter was an engineer driver.
Peter married Jane Emily Preston from Berkhamsted on Christmas Day 1901 and they lived in Rothschild Road, Linslade, Leighton Buzzard, with his father who was then widowed. They worked on the canals, Peter as an engineer driver.
In 1939 Peter and Jane lived in Boxwell Road, Berkhamsted. Peter was then working as a watchman.
Peter and Jane didn’t have any children. Peter died in July 1943 and he was buried with his wife in Rectory Lane Cemetery.
