Phoebe Annie Blount (née Preece) (1869-1942)

Phoebe Ann was born in Ledbury, Herefordshire 27 November 1869, the daughter of Philip and Phoebe Preece. Both her parents were tailors, living in Church Street, Ledbury.

At the time of the 1871 census they had nine children living at home, ranging from twenty year old George, a solicitor’s clerk, down to one month old Fanny who had just displaced Phoebe as the baby of the family. They were still at the same address ten years later.

At the time of the 1891 census Phoebe was working as a “Domestic servant nurse” in the household of Frederick Reiss, the Rector of the parish of Rock, Worcestershire. The Rector and Mrs Reiss had a daughter and son at home as well as Mrs Reiss’s sister and two visiting undergraduates from Oxford and Cambridge, originating from New Zealand and Cambridge respectively. In addition to Phoebe they employed a cook, a kitchen maid, a parlour maid, a housemaid, coachman and gardener.

Phoebe must have met Joseph Blount, a gardener, in Rock where he was living with his family. They married in 1901 in Pirton, Hertfordshire. The reason for the location has not been established – perhaps one of them was working in the parish at that point.

The census for the next year has them in Skellingthorpe in Lincolnshire, Fanny Preece, Phoebe’s sister, was also living with them.

The couple were to have two daughters – Dorothy Annie (born & died 1901) and Phoebe Mabel (1903-18).

Joseph’s work seems to have involved constant changes of employer. In 1903 they were in Rothley, Leicestershire, in 1911 in Malpass, Cheshire and in 1921, Hemel Hempstead.

By 1930 they had moved to 14, Holly Drive, Berkhamsted where Joseph died 21 May 1941 and was laid to rest here. Phoebe joined him 11 March 1942.
