Plot 1161 Richard Eagle (1876-1945)

Richard was born 6 October 1876 in Notting Hill, London, the son of Samuel Eagle, a bootmaker, and his wife Margaret.

When he married Ellen Matilda Harris in St Clement’s church, Kensington, 1 September 1901 his occupation was given as stoker. The couple were to have no children.

In 1911 Richard and Ellen were living in Farrent Street, Queen’s Park and he was employed as a furnace stoker by the Foundling Hospital. This was the famous institution founded in London by Thomas Coram in the 18th century. In 1921 he was still a stoker employed at the Foundling Hospital and the couple were living in the mews attached to the site. A few years later, in 1926, the hospital moved to Redhill and then, in 1935, 300 children were moved to their new school in Berkhamsted. It seems that Richard kept his job and moved with the school, as in the 1939 Register he and Ellen were living at the Front Lodge of the Foundlings’ Hospital (now Ashlyn’s School) and Richard was employed as the boiler house engineer’s handyman.

Richard died 17 July 1945 aged 68.
