Robert was born 5 June 1905 in Berkhamsted the second son and third child of David Gurney, born in Willesden, London and Agnes, born in Berkhamsted.

In 1921 the family were living at 47, Castle Street. His father was a sawmill foreman at Key and Sons and Robert, aged 16, was an apprentice assistant at the Court Theatre. (The theatre was closed in 1960 and the site is now occupied by Tesco).

Robert married Doris May Bignell in Berkhamsted 2 July 1930 and their son Kenneth R was born in 1935.

The 1939 Register records them living at 25, Ravens Lane. Robert was a haulage contractor

He died in 1945 aged only 40.
