Biography:
Rosa Chennells
1858 –1929

Unmarked grave Rosa Chennells (1858-1929)

Rosa was born in 1858, the youngest daughter of Adam Chennells, a cowman, and his second wife Mary Ann (née Mildmay) who lived in the High Street. She had two older half-sisters, an older brother and an older sister, Margaret.

In 1871 the family lived in Highfield Road and Adam worked as a railway carter.

Her father died in 1877 and is buried in this cemetery in an unmarked grave.

In 1881 she was living in Highfield Road with her mother, her unmarried half-sister Martha, Martha’s little girl and her married sister Margaret and her husband William Phillips and their daughter.

Rosa never married and in the 1891 census she is recorded as living with her sister Margaret Phillips (who appears to have split with her husband who returned to Wales), her niece Maragret Phillips, her half-sister Martha and niece Mary Ann. Both Margaret and Rosa worked as laundresses and Martha as a straw plait maker. In 1901 Margaret, her daughter and Rosa were living together with niece Mary Ann at 24, Highfield Road.

By 1911 only Margaret and Rosa were left at the Highfield Road house, both still working as laundresses. By 1921 Margaret’s occupation was shown as laundress while Rosa was occupied with “home duties”.

Margaret died in 1926. Rosa survived her until April 1929 when she died aged 71.
