Plot 487 Rose Emily Arnold (née Preston)
Rose was born in 1886 in Berkhamsted, the fourth of their five children of Thomas and Eliza Preston. Thomas was a bricklayer’s labourer. She was baptised St Peter’s, 26 September that year.
In 1901 Rose, aged 14, was living at home with her parents but was employed as a general domestic servant.
By April 1911 she was a live-in “general domestic” servant, one of two employed by the Hawden family at “Shenley”, North Road, Berkhamsted. George Hawden, from Yorkshire was a manager for an envelope manufacturer, perhaps John Dickinsons, and his wife had been born in the USA. They had three small children.
Not long after the census Rose married Alfred Arnold, a builder’s labourer from Hinxworth, in Berkhamsted. They were to have two sons, Cyril Alfred born 1912 and Ralph, born 1923.
In the 1921 census the family were living at 13, Ellesmere Road which is where Rose died, aged 46, 12 June 1933.
Alfred remarried to Rhoda Wilmore in 1935.
