Ruth was born 20 November 1868 in Edlesborough, Bucks, to William and Ann Cook. Her father was a labourer.
In 1881 Ruth was living with her parents, four sisters and two brothers in Church End, Edlesborough. Ruth, her older sister and her mother were all straw plaiters, producing plait for the Luton and Dunstable hat industry.
Her son Percy was born in 1904 in Edlesborough. His father is unknown.
Ruth married Alfred G Ayres in 1908. He had a son Reginald, born 1894.
Stanley was born in 1909 at Home Farm Cottages, Berkhamsted.
In 1911 the family was at Haresfoot Farm Cottages, Berkhamsted. Alfred was a farm labourer. Dorothy was born that year. They were still at the same address ten years later when Alfred was a cowman employed by Mr Hardern at Haresfoot Farm.
The 1939 Register places the couple at 254a, High Street. Alfred was “Stockman, retired”.
Ruth died in 1945.
