Plot 982 Sarah Ann Crockett (née Rance) (1855-1922)

Sarah Ann was born in 1855 in Potten End and baptised 10 June in Nettleden church. She was the oldest child of James and Emma (née Pitkin). According to the 1861 census that shows the family living at Bedford’s Cottages, Berkhamsted common, James was a “common carter”.

By 1871 the family was living in Potton End and James was a carter and dealer in wood. The family had grown and Sarah Ann had four sisters and a brother.

In 1881 when they were living in Happy Valley, Potten End and James was simply a “dealer”, three more daughters had been born. Sarah Ann was employed as a straw plaiter, as were the next two daughters.

Sarah Ann left home to become a domestic servant and in 1891 was employed by Mrs Lane, a widow of independent means, who lived with her three unmarried adult daughters and her brother, a retired farmer at the Green, Potten End.

In 1897 at Berkhamsted Sarah married William Crockett, a bricklayer born in Tring. William was 23, Sarah was 19 years his senior.

The couple were to have no children.

In 1901 they lived at 21, Holliday Street with Sarah’s unmarried younger sister Annie, a dressmaker, but by 1911 had moved to 16, Ravens Lane which was to be Sarah Ann’s home for the rest of her life.

In 1921 William was a bricklayer for Cooper & Nephew and they had a married couple as boarders.

Sarah Ann died in September 1922, aged 67, and was buried 29 September. William George survived her until 1940 and is buried with her here.
