Biography:
Sarah Ruggins
1840 –1922

Unmarked grave Sarah Ruggins (née Stone) (1840-1922)

Sarah was born in 1840 in Holmer Green, Little Missenden, Bucks to William and Ann (née White) Stone. Her father was a baker and her mother brewed beer.

She gave birth to a son, Charles in February 1861. His father is unknown. In April 1861 she and Charles were “visitors” at a house in Holmer Green and she was described as “late servant”. Presumably she had been in domestic service and had been dismissed when she fell pregnant.

Sarah married Harry Ruggins, a wooden shovel maker in 1863 in Chesham. Harry took in young Charles who used his surname.

Alfred was born in 1864 followed by Alice (1871).

In 1871 the family lived in Germain Street, Chesham. Harry was a malt shovel maker.

Walter was born in 1876.

In 1881 they lived in Way Lane, Chesham and by 1901 at 79, Germain Street, Chesham

In 1911 the couple were recorded at 79, Fullers Hill, Chesham. (This may be the same address as in 1901 as the two roads join at about no.79.)

By 1921 when they were still at 79, Fuller’s Hill, Harry had retired.

Shortly afterwards they moved to Gossoms End where Sarah died in March 1922 at 23/24 Gossoms End aged 81. Harry survived her only until April and they are buried here together.
