Stella was the third child of eleven born to Frederick Hale and his second wife Mary (née Hammond). Frederick was a draper who was born in Holborn, London but who moved to Berkhamsted by 1851.

Stella (her second name was her paternal grandmother’s maiden name) was born 29 June 1867, but sadly died 10 June1869.

Her parents lost their first four children, all daughters, under the age of three.

Happily four sons and three daughters survived infancy, although one child, Lucy Rosa, died aged nine.

Her father and his first wife Eliza lie in plot 116.
