Plot 957 Stephen James Mansfield (1874-1934)

Stephen was born in 1874 in Roydon, Essex to Stephen Mansfield, a labourer and his wife Alice (née Young).

By 1881 the family had moved to Gilston, near Ware, where Stephen snr. was a gardener’s labourer.

Stephen also became a  gardener’s labourer. At the time of the 1891 census he was visiting the household of Stephen Young, a relative of his mother’s, in Aldbury. This is probably where he met Frances Elizabeth Janes, the daughter of a local gamekeeper, whom he married in early 1897. They were to have three daughters and a son.

By 1911 the family had moved to 33, Cross Oak Road and by 1921 to The Lodge, Berkhamsted Hill. Stephen was a gardener employed by a Mrs Dunn.

He died 13 June 1934 West Herts Hospital aged 60, by which time they had moved to 87, Cross Oak Road.

Frances survived him until 1956 and is buried with him here.

His younger brother Henry, and Henry’s son Harry, are buried here in plot 712.
