Thomas was born 24 September 1849 to Thomas and Elizabeth Richardson and was baptised 30 December at St Peter’s.
Thomas snr. was a journeyman boat builder in 1861 and the family lived in Castle Street. As their next door neighbour on one side was James Venn, a master boat builder, and on the other John Hatton, a boat builder and coal merchant, it is likely that Thomas snr. worked for, or with, one of them.
Thomas snr. had been born in Leighton Buzzard and Elizabeth in Berkhamsted. All Thomas’s siblings – three girls and two boys – were born in Berkhamsted.
In both the 1871 and 1881 censuses Thomas is recorded as a domestic servant at Berkhamsted Boys’ School.
On 7 August 1882 he married Mary Rogers in Little Gaddesden.
In 1891 the couple were living at 20 Castle Street with their children who had all been born in Berkhamsted: Jane (1884) and Marian (1886) and son Thomas (1889). Thomas was working as a packer at the chemical works – presumably Cooper’s. The family were still at the same address ten years later.
By 1911 the family had moved to 2, Victoria Road where Thomas was to live for the rest of his life. Thomas jnr. had left home but the daughters were still with their parents and both worked as dressmakers. Thomas was still employed at the chemical works.
Thomas died 6 July 1917 at West Herts Hospital aged 67. Mary survived him until 1934 and is buried here with him as is their daughter Marion Copley who died in 1969.
