Thomas Webb
1873 –1947

Unmarked grave Thomas Webb (1873-1947)

Thomas was born in 1873 in Chesham, the son of wood turner Edwin Webb and his wife Jane. They were to have ten children of whom eight were living by 1911. His father was a wood turner as were many men in the area.

In 1871 the family lived in New Town, Chesham.

Thomas never married and, when his parents moved to Berkhamsted, went with them. He became a postman.

In 1891 he and his unmarried siblings were living with their parents in Bridge Street.

By 1901 they had moved to 6, Chapel Street.

The 1921 census shows Thomas as Head of Household at 6, Chapel Street. Living with him were his widowed father and three unmarried siblings.

The 1939 Register records Thomas, retired, as Head of Household at “Merton”, Swing Gate Lane. Living with him was his older brother Charles, a retired sawmill labourer, and their unmarried sister Alice who was keeping house for them.

Thomas died in 1947 aged 74.

His parents are buried in plot 1012 and his brother Frank also lies in this cemetery.
