Tommy Waller was born in May 1913 to Ellen ‘Nellie’ Elizabeth Flitney, aged 30 and Frederick ‘Fred’ Waller, aged 33. He lived for only 2 years and 5 months. As little Tommy had a shortened history, a look at his parentage may build a bigger picture of his beginnings.
Tommy's father, Frederick, was born in 1880 at 155 High Street, Berkhamsted, Herts, to John and Sarah Waller née Mills. He was the youngest of 10 siblings, 2 of which sadly died as infants.
By 1891 Frederick, aged 10, was living at 26 Cross Oak Road, Berkhamsted, Herts. He continued to live with his parents in 1901, aged 21, at 57 Charles Street, Berkhamsted and moved 3 years later once married.
Ellen ‘Nellie’ Elizabeth Flitney was born in Great Berkhamsted on 2nd May 1882. She was 1 of 9 children born to William and Mary Ann Flitney née Adams.
Ellen started her life in Northchurch. The 1881 census recorded Ellen's parents living in George Street, noted as the Civil Parish of Northchurch and the registration district of Berkhamsted. By 1901, Ellen was aged 18 and living with her family at 3 Eddy Street, Gossoms End, and working as a coat tailor finisher.
Ellen Flitney met Frederick Waller, and they married on 28th May 1904 in Berkhamsted, Herts.
According to the 1911 census, they lived at Lees Cottages, Provident Place, Great Berkhamsted, Herts. Frederick, aged 30, was working as a wooden box maker employed by a chemical man, whilst Ellen, aged 28, looked after their 2 daughters: Kathleen, aged 6, and Elsie, aged 2.
Frederick served in the military between 1916-1919, his rank was Private and his regiment number was PS/1111 in the Royal Fusiliers within the 11th battalion, then the 9th battalion attached to Coy Royal Engineers. He was awarded the British War medal and the Victory medal. It was just before serving time away from home that he lost his only son Tommy, in 1915. Although Frederick survived his years of service, he became ill around 1919 with the Spanish flu during the pandemic. He sadly passed away on 30th November 1919 at the age of 39. His name is engraved on the war memorials of Rectory Lane Cemetery and St Peter's Church.
Tommy's mother remarried in October 1928 to Bertie Redding in Berkhamsted, Herts. She passed in October 1976 at Chiltern and Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire.
Tommy's 2 elder sisters went on to live full lives. Kathleen Lottie, born on 27th March 1905 in Berkhamsted, married Leslie E Brandon in October 1926. Kathleen passed at the grand old age of 91 in June 1996 at Chiltern and South Bucks. Elsie Mary was born on 15th May 1908 in Berkhamsted and married Albert G Bedford in 1927. Elsie passed in April 1979, aged 71.
Tommy passed away on 27th October 1915 and rests in Rectory Lane Cemetery in his little plot alongside his father, cousins, uncles and aunts.
