Plot 887 Walter Thomas Chandler (1856-1931)

Walter was born in late 1856 and baptised 15 March 1857 at All Saints Wandsworth.

He was the second son of John and Jane (née Heady) Chandler. John was a gardener “to a gentleman” according to the 1861 census when they were living at 1, Edwards Place, Wandsworth.

They were still at the same address ten years later when John, his oldest son William, and Walter were all employed as “Domestic gardeners”. Four more daughters and another son had been added to the family.

In 1875 Walter married Alice Townsend. Their son Walter John William was born in early 1881 in Notting Hill. In April Alice and baby Walter were visiting her married sister in Kensington. What Walter snr. was doing has not been traced.

Between at least 1891 and 1901  they lived at 237, Grays Inn Road, London. Walter was a coffee shop keeper and they employed two live-in domestic servants.

It is not known when Walter retired and the couple moved to Berkhamsted, but in April 1921 they were living at 16, Clarence Road, Berkhamsted and he was recorded as having “No occupation”.

Alice died in January 1931. Walter survived her by only a few weeks, dying 10 March 1931. They were buried here together.
