William Henry Birtchnell 1874-1920 William Henry Birtchnell was born in Berkhamsted in 1874, the eldest son and second child, of William Birtchnell senior, and Mary Ann (nee potter). He grew up in Highfield Road, with his seven siblings. His father was a third generation master stonemason. By the age of 17 William  was working as a printer’s assistant, a career he would continue throughout his life. He never married, and was buried with his older sister Emily Mary Ann, who also never married.
