William Clifton
1840 –1912

Unmarked Grave William Clifton (1840-1912)

Born in 1840 in Little Gaddesden, the son of William Clifton, an agricultural labourer and his wife Anne, William was to have a hard life.

He worked as a general labourer and never married, or it seems, had a home of his own.

In 1901 he was a lodger at the Black Horse in the High Street, but by April 1911 he was an inmate in the Union workhouse at 241, High Street.

He died in the Infirmary there in May 1912 aged 72.
