Biography:
William Flitney
1824 –1905

Unmarked grave William Flitney (1824-1905)

Wllliam was born in 1824, the son of John Flitney (or Fleckney), an agricultural labourer from Aldbury, and his wife Ann (née Young).

William married Mary Ann Randall in Berkhamsted 8 November 1848 and daughter Lizzie was born in 1850 to be followed  by William jnr. the next year. In 1851 the family lived very close to The Royal Hotel at Tring station where William, a railway porter, worked.

Sarah was born in 1852 but the family had moved to Berkhamsted at least 1856 when Ellen arrived.

In the 1861 census they are recorded living in Water Lane and William snr. was a “railway man”. Baby Mary Ann was just 3 months old.

He had changed occupations and become a house painter by April 1871 when the family were living at 7, Mill Street, Berkhamsted where William would remain for the rest of his life.  Ten years later William was still working as a labourer.

In 1901 William had retired. He died in July 1905, aged 81 at 7, Mill Street.

His son William and daughter-in-law Mary Ann are buried in plot 608. His grandsons William and Frank lie in plot 553.
