William Gates
WILLIAM GATES: 1837 - 1902
William Gates was born in Ringshall, Buckinghamshire in 1837 to Job and Susan, née Puddifoot, Gates. He had 5 siblings: Charlotte, born in 1839; Sarah, 1842; Rachel, 1849-1902; Joseph, 1851, and Emma, 1855. In 1841 the family lived in Waterside. William’s father, Job, was a farm labourer and in 1851 William was working as an errand boy. He was a grocer’s assistant in 1861 and the family were then living in Castle Street. Berkhamsted.
William married Emily Maria Cook (1841-1911) on 3rd March 1867 in Blean, near Canterbury, her home village. They already had three children when they married; Thomas, born in 1862; Emily Mary, 1865; Sarah Ann, 1866. A son, Arthur William, was born in 1870 but sadly he only lived for a year. Walter Ernest was born in 1873, followed by George Edward six years later in 1879 and then Henry Albert, 1880-1953. In 1871 the family lived in Wycombe and William was a tallow chandler.
By 1881 the family had fallen on hard times. William was in the Faversham Union workhouse and his wife Emily Maria and his two youngest sons George and Henry were living with Emily’s sister and family in Westgate Canterbury.
By 1891 William had left the workhouse. He and Emily had moved to Water Lane, Berkhamsted with their sons Walter, George and Henry. William was working as a general labourer. Walter, then 18, was also a labourer. George, 14, was a printer’s folder and Henry, 11, was at school.
In 1901 they lived in Thomson’s Row, Berkhamsted. Walter had moved out of the family home and George and Henry were both working as bricklayers.
William died 21st February 1902 and was buried in Rectory Lane Cemetery. Several members of this large extended Gates family died in 1902 including William’s sister Rachel. Perhaps there was an epidemic of some sort around that year.
