William was born at Wolverton, Buckinghamshire, on 5 June 1862, to James Geary and Frances Catherine Andrews. He was baptised at St Peter’s, Berkhamsted on Christmas Day, 1876.
James was a coach painter, born in Berkhamsted, and Frances was a school mistress from Clerkenwell, London. In the 1871 census they were recorded living in the High Street. Eight year old William was a scholar and he had a two year old brother, Harry Leonard.
Ten years later William was living at home and working as a printer’s compositor. His father was out of work but his mother was still shown as a schoolmistress. Two unrelated nine year old boys were also in the household, described as visitors and scholars. Perhaps Frances was teaching them.
At some point William changed his occupation and when he married on 15 August 1888 he was a newsagent living at 69, Fernhill Road, Paddington. His bride was Elizabeth Rhodes Adams and they married at St Emmanuel’s church, Paddington. Elizabeth was a farmer’s daughter and her home address was given as “Bancroft, St Peter’s, Berkhamsted.”
Three years later William had changed his occupation once again and it was described in the 1891 census as “insurance profession”. He and Elizabeth were living at 4, Catherine Terrace, Lambeth. His aunt and uncle Sarah and John Geary Andrews, “living on their own means”, were either visiting or living with them.
They must have left London soon after the census, because between 1892 and 1899 William and Elizabeth had six children, five sons and a daughter, all born at Piddington, Northamptonshire: (David William, Victor James, Cornelius, Sydney, Lily and Archibald) The 1901 census showed yet another change of occupation and address: William was a self-employed general carter and they were living at 5, Grey Friars Street, Northampton. Here their seventh and final child, Albert, was born.
