William James Griffin 1873-1954

William James Griffin was born in New Hinksey, Oxford on 12 May 1873.  His parents were James and Sophia Griffin.  As a child he moved to South Hinksey with his parents and his first employment was as a thatching assistant.  In 1891 he joined the Great Western Railways as a goods porter.  He worked in Oxford, Reading and Bristol.  On the 20 April 1896, in St Giles Church, Reading he married Sarah Constance Brown.  His first child William James Griffin was born in 1897 and was baptized in South Hinksey, Oxford on 11 July, residence was 28 Francis Street, Reading.  In 1901 he was working as a railway porter in Kingsthorpe Northants.

His second son Ernest Walter Griffin was born in Berkhamsted on 29 July 1906 followed by his daughter Hilda Mary on 12 February 1912.  In the 1911 census he was living in 6 Holliday Street and he was employed by Hertfordshire County Council as a Roadsman.  He continued to work for them until he retired and live in 6 Holliday Street until he died aged 81 in St Paul’s Hospital, Hemel Hempstead on 30 September 1954.  He left an estate of £192.15s.6d.
