William was born in Northall, Edlesborough,  Bucks 14 June 1881 to Joseph Hing, a general labourer and his wife Sarah Jane (née Ginger). He was the oldest of their eight children.

In 1891 the family were living in the unfortunately-named Pest House Lane in Edlesborough but moved to Meadow Farm, Ringshall, Little Gaddesden.

In 1901 William was employed as a groom by widow Mrs Oxenham of Bovingdon House. Bovingdon. He lived over the stables with one of the gardeners.

William obviously spotted the risk to his job with the coming of the petrol engine and by 1911 he was a chauffeur, lodging at 61, Horsecroft Road, Boxmoor.

William married Edith Ellen Bradbrook later that year in the Hatfield registration district and daughter Margaret Joyce was born in 1913 in Boxmoor.

Enlisting on 18 May 1915, William served as a private in France and Belgium in the Army Service Corps, Mechanical Transport section.

Son Frederick James was born in 1918 in Boxmoor and William was discharged 28 February 1919 to 9c, Puller Road, Boxmoor. He is listed on the Roll of Honour in St Peter & St Pauls Church, Little Gaddesden listing the 119 local men who served in the 1st World War. His brothers Edward, Lewis and Joseph are also listed.

In 1921 the family lived at 73, High Street. William was a lorry driver for H Lee & Sons, mineral water manufacturers. He appears to have remained in their employ until at least 1939.

In the 1930s the family lived at 59, Cross Oak Road but by 1939 had moved to 39, Victoria Road where William lived for the rest of his life.

Edith died at home 8 April 1945 and is buried here.

William died 10 April 1955 St Paul’s Hospital, Hemel Hempstead.
