William Potter

Unmarked grave William Potter (1863-1905)
William was born in 1863 in Berkhamsted to Joseph and Emma Potter. His father was a labourer and his mother a plaiter, producing straw plait for the Luton and Dunstable hat industry, a common form of home work in labouring families.
By the time William was seventeen he was working as a labourer.
In 1891 he and his younger brother Peter were living with their sister Mary, her husband stone mason Harry Winter, and their family in Victoria Road. William was a labourer in a timber yard.
21 October 1899 William married Lizzie Ogden, 14 years his junior, in St Mary’s Northchurch.
At the time of the 1901 census they were living at 5, Gossoms End and he was still working in the timber yard. Son William jnr had just been born in late 1900.
Bertha was born in 1903 and Edward in 1904.
William died in at home in October 1905 aged 42, leaving a widow and three very young children.
Lizzie married George Fountain, a labourer, in 1907, and moved to his home village of Edlesborough with the children.
