William Saunders

William Saunders

William was buried on 17 July 1945, age 72.

He was born on 17 December 1872. When he was 8 years old he was living with his father and family of sisters in Whelpley Hill, close to the White Hart pub. His father was an agricultural labourer. In 1891, when William was 18, he was living with his parents in Latimer Hamlet, and working as a farm labourer.

He married Minnie Dell in on August 7 1899 at Ashley Green. Minnie was born on 2 October 1879, and died in 1955 in Berkhamsted.

In 1901 they were living at Whelpley Hill on the Hempstead Road with their first baby, Margaret. William was working as a traction engine driver on a farm.

In 1911 they were living at Sales Farm, near Berkhamsted , with five children, and William was still a traction engine driver.

In 1916 William joined the army, as a private in the labour corps of the Devonshire regiment (he may have been given the job of operating the traction engines that were used to move the large artillery on the western front).  

In 1921 the family was were living in Ashley Green. William worked for WMJ Marsh farmer and market gardener (who ran a big operation at Whelpley Ash farm). Six of the eight children were living with them – the youngest born after his return from the war. In all they had ten children: Margaret, Walter, Doris, Florence, Frances, Kathleen, Arthur, Olive, Winfred and Sherley.

By 1939 the family had moved into Berkhamsted: they were living at 7 Water Lane. William was working as a bolt threader at a pulley works. Four of their children were still living with them. He died at the same address in 1945.
