William Shearer Harvey

Unmarked grave William Shearer Harvey (1876-1941)
William was born 10 January 1876 in Glasgow to Janet and John Harvey, a tailor. In 1881 the family were living at 11, Canning Street, Glasgow.
In 1891 William was living with parents and two brothers and two sisters at 18, Balcarres Street, Edinburgh. Aged 15, he was an accountant’s clerk.
In 1901 he was still living with his family at 1, Plewlands Terrace, Morningside, Edinburgh and working as a stockbroker’s clerk.
By 1911 he had moved to London and was boarding with his older brother John and his family in Putney and working as a clerk at a typewriter supply company.
On 13 March 1917 William was called up for military service, aged 38. At the time he was a secretary and accountant living at 124, Elgin Avenue, Maida Vale, London and was sent to a Reserve Supply Personnel depot in Bath, part of the Royal Army Service Corps, providing provisions for the troops. It appears he was a private with a clerical role and his records show he was “very good” at both shorthand and typing.
His records also tell us that William was 5’ 9½” tall with good physical development.
He married Lilian Linton Milton Adams, a clerk, on 7 July 1917 at St Saviour’s church, Paddington.
On 21 January 1919 William was discharged from the Army and in 1921 the census records the couple living at 212, Cricklewood Lane, Hendon. William was a commercial traveller for The Smith Premier Typewriter company.
He later became a solicitor’s clerk and in 1939 he and Lilian were living in the household of solicitor William Addiscott at Beechfield, Chesham Road.
His home address was “Dirleton”, Park View Road when he died at West Herts Hospital in May 1941 aged 65.
