Zilpha Osborne

Unmarked grave Zilpha Osborne (née Dealey) (1847-1929)
Zilpha was born 1847 in Northchurch to Jesse and Elizabeth Dealey. Her father was a labourer.
In 1871 the family were living at Canal Side and, like many daughters of labouring families, Zilpha was a straw plaiter, making plait for the Luton and Dunstable hat industry. The family must have been very hard up – her father had died, two of her brothers were out of work labourers, the three youngest children were at plait school and only Zilpha and her mother, plaiters, and her 17 year old brother who was a labourer, were earning.
Her son Alfred Dealey was born in 1873. His father’s name is not known.
Zilpha married Edward Joseph Osborne, a bricklayer’s labourer, in early 1879 in Berkhamsted. They were to have five children, three of whom had died by 1911
In 1881 Zilpha and Edward lived in Red Lion Yard with her brother and sister.
Rose was born in 1882 and Elizabeth in 1884.
By 1891 they had moved to the Wilderness. Edward was a garden labourer, Zilpha was working as a charwoman and Alfred was a general labourer.
In 1901 they were living at 50, Castle Street where Zilpha remained for the rest of her life. Edward was garden labourer. Rose and Elizabeth were at home. Granddaughter Edith May had just been born, possibly the child of Elizabeth as in 1911 Elizabeth, a laundry maid, and Edith May were still living with Zilpha and Edward.
By 1921 Edward was a fruit farmer employed by Mr Joseph North. Edith was living with them and was employed making tooth brushes for Messrs. G B Kent. (The company, established in 1777, is still producing all kinds of brushes for personal care. The company headquarters moved from London to Apsley, Hertfordshire on the 6th February 1904, and remains there to this day.)
Zilpha died in the Union infirmary in September 1929 aged 84.
