Unmarked grave Arthur Joseph Attwood (1859-1931)
Arthur was born in 1859 in Church Street, Dunstable, Beds, to Henry and Mary Attwood. His father was a stone sawyer, his mother was a straw bonnet sewer.
In 1871 he was at home with his parents and older brother and sister in Halifax Yard, West Street, Dunstable.
In 1881 he was living with his parents and younger brother at 16, Manchester Place, Dunstable and working as a general labourer.
Arthur married Eliza Cooper in 1884 but she died in 1894 and in 1891 he was living with his widowed father, his unmarried sister and a child that was probably hers, at 73, Princes Street. He was an omnibus driver.
April 1892 Arthur was assaulted by William Ayres. Arthur, who lived in Princes Street, Dunstable, was driving a bus owned by the Sugar Loaf Hotel, Dunstable, and was in the yard of the North Western station in Dunstable. He and a porter intervened when they saw Ayres, who was drunk, knock another man down. Arthur was struck several times. Ayres spent six days in jail and was fined.
Arthur married Annie Maria Parkins in 1893 in Luton district and Elsie Mary was born in 1896 in Dunstable.
The family moved to Berkhamsted by 1901 when they lived at 32, George Street, Northchurch. Arthur was a “Parcel carman”.
Nellie Jenetta was born in 1899 in Berkhamsted. Her mother Annie Maria died in early 1910.
Arthur married for the third time to Mary Ann Ruth Miller in early 1911 in Berkhamsted
In April that year the family lived at 7, Montague Road. Arthur was employed by the London & North West Railway Co. as a parcels van man. Elsie was a domestic servant.
In June 1921 they were at 7 Montague Road. Arthur was still employed by the L&NWR Co. as a parcels van man. Nellie living at home was employed by the L&NW as a shorthand typist.
Arthur died at 7 Montague Road in October 1931 aged 71. His funeral service was conducted by the Wesleyan minister.
Mary Ann died in 1946 and is buried here with him.
